Daimler SP 250 Dart

Its beauty is on the inside…

The Daimler SP 250 is rare. Of the 2654 models manufactured, only a handful remains… of which one can be found in our “collection”! Despite being discontinued by Jaguar to give way for the E Type, the “Dart” has many great features of which one is a unique look and a treat of little all alloy 2.5l V8 engine… what a sound!!!

However, despite its thunderous mechanics, the Daimler “Dart” received mixed reception, the fault of a very (or too) audacious design conceived to seduce the American market. This was also possibly due to the financial situation of Daimler during its launch. A financial picture that was already suffering because of the ostentatious flaunting by its owner Bernard Docker and his flamboyant wife Lady Norah… more means would have been necessary to continue producing this very original model, with its body completely made from fibre glass and its 4 disc brakes, unique in that era.

Over and above the innovations, the Daimler is also a very typical British Roadster sporting its Moto-Lita steering wheel, its Smith dash board, its central hubs for spoked wheels and its very short and sporty gear box largely inspired by that of the TR3. The “last Daimler” which was designed to “conquer” America is however a true “Brit”…

Practical Note: The Daimler SP 250 “Dart” is a true 2 + 2 offering a fine bench seat in the back which will fit two young children (or even two adults for a short trip). Its luggage compartment is large and its V8 engine allows one to envisage a journey on the motorway without any problems. Even the brakes function excellently.

The driving experience is that of a British roadster from the 50’s. A little strength and concentration are necessary on winding roads but the sensations are marvellous. Even when driving at a reasonable speed it is a car that brings much joy…
